Photo, 2008. As a visual reference for my poem "China We Face, I. Beijing," people enjoy eating "street food," small pieces of meat on skew, standing around a trash bucket in front of a snack stand on the alley. One skew of meat costs only 13 cents (one Yuan) as a bargain price.

Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 inches. After a sprinkling shower in the afternoon, a bright sun light shines through a low-rise buildings on Place du Tertre. Temperature is about 74-degree perfect and air is fresh enough to enjoy outdoor dining. On the front left is the largest restaurant of la Butte, La Cremaillere 1900 in an elegant Belle Epoque decor, looking out onto a lovely, shaded, flower-filled courtyard garden.

Lobster Boats in Boothbay Harbor by Walter Lee, Maine, 2008
Oil on canvas panel, 12 x 9 inches. On the backdrop is a Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady Queen of Peace on 82 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. Cobalt water and deep green forest are trademarks in this harbor. The painter captured this scenary from the boat heading for Cabbage Island. It is a coincidence that this vista was semi-abstractively painted by a well-known painter in Maine, Alfred C. Chadbourn, who emphasized the importance of capturing the essence of painter's emotion and simplifying the blue water and green hill in the background.
Winding Canal in Venice, 2007
Oil on canvas panel, 9 x 12 inches. Off a narrow street named Salizada S. Lio (Venezia), I sat on a stone staircase and painted the canal. It was hard to capture its nuance in the beginning. To make it worse, I became a final destination of pigeon excrement.

While having painted a canal, I was bombarded by pigeons. John Singer Sargent had painted Venice Par Temps Gris (1880) here.
Rainy Daufuskie Island, 2005
Oil on canvas, 20 x 16 inches. We braved this cruise through a stormy ocean off Hilton Head Island by a small pontoon. It was raining, windy and noisy from a minimal rear-hanging motor. There is no vehicles, no street signals, no paved roads, no routine street signs, no stores, no public facilities; almost no man's island. There were empty piers and deserted boats on the ground, moss-hanging and water-soaked trees.

During his workshop in Laguna Beach, California, we had a lunchbreak at a small town cafe in Silverado near Cleveland National Forest. He is a great painter without art school diplomas. His three-color limited palette is unique, his brush works are easy flowing, and a dark-to-light value approach is exemplary. He is so strong against cold weather that he calls himself "Polar Bear."

Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches. Lobster boats and small boats are waiting for another day's dream catching works in the morning. A chilly fall has come and is moving fast toward wintry days. The painting is based on one of Acadia National Park photos taken by Raymond Gehman and published in a book of Our Inviting Eastern Parklands by National Geographic Society.

Walter and Charlene extolled these lobster feast; it took almost two hours to consume thoroughly two sweet, succulent and sustaining (in taste) lobsters (whole thing, not just tail) and others including a bowl of clams, clam chowder soup, sweet corn, egg, and potato. I bet no place in the world can offer this abundant meal.

Oil on canvas, 36 x 47 3/4 inches. A lonely saxophone player entertains many passers-by who came to downtown Chicago for summer vacation. In the wake of 9-11 attacks, Sears Tower on the left side was overly protected by red-white-blue colored concrete barriers.

Oil on canvas panel, 14 x 11 inches, This antiquated small town surrounded by mountain ridges is mysteriously enshrined by low-hanging fog below the mountain ridges in the morning, but once the ocean wind is reversed Main Street turns into a lively business corridor with all kinds of old town ambience. Even many haunted house explorers in town enjoy its cheerfulness.

Oil on canvas panel, 12 x 9 inches. Court Street (Nogales, Arizona) is only two blocks away from the U.S.- Mexico border (for pedestrians) and throng with Mexican resident shoppers. Yet there is Catholic churches, a century old courthouse, and other historical and ordinary stores.

Kim English workshop was organized by Art in the Aspens Workshop for which Marty Brens had energetically coordinated. Kim English paints as fast as rockets, yet delivers all essential ingredients in an inspirational way. His objects are the people in the landscape that I like most. The photo was taken at the Parkside Restaurant and Bar in Pueblo, Colorado.

She emphasized a theory of three values, no more, no less. Her trademark is masterful Impasto. A painting in my hands titled "Three Bathers" by Peggi was purchased during her workshop in Laguna Beach, California. She resides in Angels Camp in northern California off Jamestown.
